Situated along the shores of Lake Kivu, one Africa’s Lake Kivu, one of Great Lakes, Karongi is a favorite spot for relaxation, adventure, and exploration.

After the morning breakfast, embark on the drive to Karongi district to explore the one of great lake in Africa also ranked among the 3 exploding lakes though it is safely monitored for gas extraction and energy production. When driving ahead Karongi road but still in Nyange sector, you will see Nyange genocide memorial site which was once a parish and now it is a resting home to a hundred of innocent victims of bad government! While listening to the story from that nightmare survivors, your might feel touched emotionally, its ok to.  Drive along the lakeshore city Karongi. Lake Kivu will welcome you from a distance to Karongi and you will be amazed by this beautiful lake lies approximately on 1°30′–2°30′ South latitude and 28°50′–29°25′ East longitude along the Albertine rift in the western arm of East Africa rift, dividing Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.

The lake contains high concentration of dissolved methane and carbon dioxide in its deep waters. These gases are a result of geological activity and microbial decomposition. It is a home to some biodiversity of waterbirds, fishes and numerous amphibians. It’s beautiful islands especially touristic ones of Amahoro Island, Monkey Island a home a playful vervet monkey species and Napoleon Island make many tourists run to both internationals and domestics.

Napoleon Island took the named after its looking structure which looks like French revolution man, the Emperor of French empire, Napoleon Bonaparte, the Island is a home to colony bats and you will meet cows grazing alongside of the lake. After having a shore lunch at the one of beautiful stunning restaurant, you will go for boat cruise to the Islands and while coming back take some short time visiting Rwanda National Environmental Museum, lie on one foot to the boat pot.  The museum is the first of its kind in Africa, educates visitors about renewable and non-renewable energy sources and features a traditional herbal medicine garden on the rooftop. It aims to help people understand and protect their environment for sustainable development. The museum includes exhibits on energy sources and their environmental impact, and a rooftop garden highlighting native medicinal plants. The house is a home too, to different mummified animal species, which used for education purpose.
